OAKLAND, Calif. -- Josh Reddick hit an RBI single that capped a three-run rally in the ninth inning, lifting the Oakland Athletics over the Houston Astros 4-3 on Saturday. The Astros lost their sixth in a row. Jed Lowrie started the comeback with a leadoff home run against Chad Qualls (0-1). Josh Donaldson walked and Yoenis Cespedes then singled. After Qualls struck out pinch-hitter John Jaso, Alberto Callaspo hit a tying single and Reddick followed with a one-out liner to right-centre. Dan Otero (3-0) pitched the ninth for the win after starter Scott Kazmir had gone eight strong innings. Jonathan Villar homered and scored twice for Houston. A day after scoring seven runs in the first inning and hitting four home runs overall, the As were kept mostly quiet until their outburst in the ninth. Oakland had stranded 12 runners through the first eight innings and left the bases loaded in the sixth. Reddicks single off Qualls was the fourth game-ending hit of his career and continued a recent offensive surge for Oaklands outfielder. Reddick had two hits and a home run in Fridays 11-3 win after starting the season in a 4-for-41 rut. The Athletics rally in the ninth spoiled a solid effort from Houston starter Brett Oberholtzer, who allowed one run and eight hits over 5 2-3 innings but remains winless in four starts. Oberholtzer pitched with runners on in each of the first five innings but limited the damage each time. He got Derek Norris to fly out with runners on the corners in the third, then speared Norris comebacker and threw to first to get out of another two-out, two-on jam in the fifth. Kazmir allowed two earned runs and six hits. He struck out five and walked none. The Astros got to Kazmir early when Villar homered on an 0-2 pitch in the third. Villar also doubled off the wall in left-centre in the fifth and scored on a throwing error by Norris, the catcher. Oakland tied it at 1 when Craig Gentry, who crashed into the fence while backpedaling chasing after Villars home run, hit an RBI double that scored Daric Barton. Former As first baseman Chris Carter doubled and scored on Matt Dominguezs RBI single in the fourth to put the Astros back in front. The game was halted briefly with two outs in the top of the eighth when umpires lost track of the pitch count. A meeting was held near the mound before crew chief Mike Winters went to replay for clarification. Guida, 25, saw limited action in 42 games with the Goldeyes last season. He hit .184 in 38 at-bats and registered an RBI. He didnt register enough at-bats to accumulate a year of service, so he remains a first-year rookie in the American Association. “Hes a really good rookie,” Forney said. “Unfortunately the way our roster evolved last year, we didnt get him nearly enough playing time as I would have liked. He has the ability to be a really good catcher. He has good hands, a really strong throwing arm, good feet behind the plate and really does a good job of calling games. Offensively, I think he has a lot of pop and some extra-base hit potential. We look forward to see him in camp again this year.” Guida was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Tigers in 2012 and played the second half of that season in their system. Garcia, 22, played most of lasst season in the Houston Astros organization at the Rookie level with Greeneville of the Appalachian League.ddddddddddddHe went 2-1 with a 5.85 ERA in 16 appearances with Greeneville and had two scoreless appearances with Class A Short Season Tri-City of the New York/Penn League. “He came highly recommended from an agent,” Forney said. “He has a powerful arm, anywhere from 91-94 MPH. Were looking for some younger guys to help fill out our pitching staff. Were hopeful he can come in and solidify a spot on the team. He can start and relieve. Well get a good look at him in training camp and determine where he fits best on our roster.” A 29th round selection by the Astros in the 2012 MLB amateur draft, Garcia played the last two seasons in their system at the Rookie and Class A Short Season levels. Winnipeg has also released pitchers Mark Hardy and Patrick Keating, who have retired from professional baseball. The Goldeyes now have 20 players signed for the 2014 season, including nine pitchers and 11 position players. ' ' '
