TORONTO -- The Toronto Marlies lost the special-teams battle to the visiting Rochester Americans and that made all the difference. The Marlies surrendered two power-play goals and failed to score on six man-advantage opportunities en route to a 4-1 defeat in American Hockey League action on Saturday. "One of the keys we talked about in the dressing room was the special teams game," said Marlies coach Steve Spott. "They go 2-for-7 and were 0-for-6 and thats the hockey game. "The effort was there but ultimately our challenge is pure finishing around the net. We have to find ways to manufacture offence and it may not be pretty." Rochesters Luke Adam scored his seventh goal in seven games, and extended his goal-scoring streak to four games. Mike Zigomanis, Alexander Sulzer and Phil Varone -- with an empty-netter -- provided the rest of the Americans offence. Adam and Varone chipped in with an assist apiece for two-point games. The contest also marked Zigomanis return to Toronto, where he spent the previous four seasons with the Marlies before signing with Rochester last summer. "Theyve got some veterans over there, theyve got some offensive weapons over there that were good tonight," Spott said. "When you look at Luke Adam and how hes playing right now, hes a natural finisher and hes getting it done." With the victory, their third win in four outings, the Americans improved to 4-2-1 on the season. Matt Hackett was sharp in the Rochester goal, making 29 saves and surviving a penalty shot. The Americans netminder was the beneficiary of solid team defence in front of him, and also got some help from his goalposts. Toronto defenceman John-Michael Liles clanged one midway through the second period and again in the third, and Marlies defender T.J. Brennan hit the post on a penalty shot early in the third period. "Give Hackett some credit," Spott said. "Usually the goalie has to be your best penalty-killer and I thought he was excellent for them tonight." Spencer Abbott had the lone goal for Toronto, his first of the season, in front of 4,169 fans at Ricoh Coliseum. "I tipped one off the crossbar right before (scoring) and I missed an open net earlier, so I was thinking it might be tough to get that first one," said Abbott, who has eight assists in six games. "But it just squirted out and (Kevin) Marshall made a nice play a it was a tap-in." Toronto goalie Garret Sparks, making his second start of the season, had 25 saves in a losing effort. "He battled hard, he competed, I dont fault him on any of the goals," Spott said. "He was solid, he gave us a chance to win." The Marlies have dropped three of their past four games, scoring a total of six goals in that span, to fall to 4-3-0. "We have an elite group of defencemen here, weve got some offensively gifted defencemen, so the message is get pucks to the net and then the forwards have to get around the net," Spott said. "Theres some natural finish that you need to have, but we did a good job. We generated a lot, we had pucks around the net. a But ultimately we have to allow our power play to get us a goal every night because 5-on-5, its a struggle for us to score regularly." Adam opened the scoring on the power play when he whipped a high wrist shot from the right faceoff circle past Sparks glove at 16:09 of the first period, just four seconds after Torontos Tyler Biggs was sent off for holding. Zigomanis, with his third goal of the season, whacked a rebound over Sparks blocker at 7:12 of the second period. Sulzer made it 3-0 for the visitors when Adam fired a cross-ice pass which the Americans defenceman one-timed into the gaping net at 16:58 of the middle frame. After Brennans penalty shot hit iron early in the third period, Abbott deposited a rebound into the open net to put the Marlies on the scoreboard at 10:16 and Varone closed out the scoring with an unassisted empty-netter at 19:45. The Marlies visit the Hamilton Bulldogs on Sunday, while the Americans are off until next Friday when they host the Syracuse Crunch. Speaking on TSN Radio 1050s TSN Drive with Dave Naylor on Monday, Colangelo said he had no intention of tanking the shortened 2011-12 season, but definitely wanted a high pick in the draft. "I wish that word wasnt used for headline reasons," said Colangelo, "but the story behind it was: how can we fix the system? How can we tweak the system to make it less likely that teams are rewarded for losing records? "I do believe that if youre as transparent as we were at the time - with our season seat holders, our fans, the market place and the media - everybody knew what the plan was and what we were going through.ST. LOUIS - Twice, Shelby Miller struck out the hardest man to fan in the major leagues. The rest of the time, the rookie threw more off-speed stuff than usual, let the St. Louis Cardinals defence do its job, and waited for the offence to show up. Norichika Aoki fanned three times for the first time in his two major league seasons, twice against Miller, and Matt Hollidays two-run homer broke up Wily Peraltas no-hit bid in the sixth inning of a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night. "Hes an amazing hitter and hes definitely a little different, how he swings and stuff," Miller said. "Thats one of the main things I looked at it, going in and seeing how I needed to get him out. "I got him with a changeup and a backup cutter." Aoki struck for the third time against another rookie, lefty Kevin Siegrist, with a runner on second to end the seventh. Aoki entered the game as the toughest batter to fan in the majors this year, averaging one per 17.2 at-bats. "Against Siegrist, I think the ball hit the mitt before he even swung," Miller said. "I think he throws 97-98 mph. Not fair, not fair." Matt Carpenter and Matt Adams added RBIs in the seventh and eighth for the NL Central leaders, who are 4-0 to begin a nine-game homestand. After a day off, the Cardinals built on momentum from a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh. "We know whats at stake," Miller said. "Were watching the other teams, were keeping up with it all. I think it makes it more fun for us." The 22-year-old Miller (13-9) kept the pitch count down and allowed five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 6 2-3 innings. Hes 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA in four starts against Milwaukee, the other two wins coming on the road. "Look at his numbers; hes a great young pitcher," Brewers manager Ron Roenicks said. "The first time we saw him, he just threw high fastballs and blew us away. Hes really pitching now." Peralta (9-15) was significantly improved over his first two starts against the Cardinals, both in May, in which he allowed 12 runs and 22 hits in 9 1-3 innings. In 6 2-3 innings he was charged with three runs and three hits with seven strikeouts. The Brewers avoided getting shut out for a third time by St. Louis on pinch-hitter Logan Schafers two-run homer off Edward Mujica in the ninth. Peralta struckk out five of the first seven hitters and the Cardinals had two baserunners the first five innings: a walk by Holliday in the fourth and first baseman Jonathan Lucroys error on a dropped throw in the third.dddddddddddd Aoki kept the no-hitter going with a sliding catch down the right field line that robbed David Freese of a hit opening the fifth. Holliday fouled balls off his left foot or ankle three times in the first two at-bats, near where hes wearing a guard from previous occurrences. Carpenter walked to open the sixth and Holliday saw just one pitch his third time against Peralta, hammering a fastball an estimated 424 feet to left-centre for his 19th homer. Holliday left during manager Mike Mathenys post-game news conference after speaking briefly to a few reporters. Catcher Martin Maldonado said the pitch was supposed to be inside. "We threw like eight sinkers and he didnt hit them," Maldonado said. "But that one didnt break. It wasnt a mistake. "If that ball sinks, he might hit his foot again." Siegrist, a 41st-round draft pick, has worked 18 consecutive scoreless innings and has held left-handed hitters to just four hits in 53 at-bats. Rookie Scooter Gennett of Milwaukee had two hits and is batting .394 his last 30 games. Brett Hull chucked a side-armed ceremonial first pitch, a day after the hockey Hall of Famer rejoined the St. Louis Blues as an executive vice-president. NOTES: Matheny said there was "no timetable or any better guesstimate" on when Allen Craig might return from a sprained left foot. Craig is batting .396 against Milwaukee with two homers and 10 RBIs. ... Roenicke picked the Cardinals to prevail in the Central because theyre "probably the most well-rounded team," and also thought all three teams would be contenders for years to come. "And thats a tough thing for us," he said. "You dont have all these veterans who are going to be free agents and theyre going to be losing all these guys." ...The Brewers played the first of 20 straight days, the maximum allowed in the collective bargaining agreement, to end the season. Theyll use a six-man rotation the rest of the year, getting an extended look at youngsters Tyler Thornburg and Johnny Hellweg, the PCL pitcher of the year at Triple-A Nashville, and give extra days off to the rest of the rotation.
