Environment Minister Pohamba Shifeta made the announcement at a media briefing in Windhoek on Friday.


He said the ministry had already established a committee to look at the safety of tourists in Namibia.


"The ministry in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders plan to develop a comprehensive tourist safety strategy that will set out measures to curb this phenomenon that is on an increase before it totally destroys our economy," he said.


He urged the country to ensure the safety of tourists and visitors.


"We as Namibians must develop a positive and more appreciative approach towards our tourists by changing our mindsets and attitudes so that tourists will not feel threatened," he said.


Last week, A family of four German tourists survived an attempted hijacking and robbery just after arriving in the country.
